In February, the Italian Department presented a joyous, uplifting prayers about Il Festival di Sanremo, Italy’s most famous music festival, in the very week that the festival was taking place in Italy. The Sanremo Music Festival is a glitzy and glamorous affair (as was ours!) and takes place every year at the Teatro Ariston (performing arts theatre) in Sanremo.
The festival was the inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest and the winner often represents Italy in the competition. It has launched the careers of numerous Italian acts, including the internationally renowned Andrea Bocelli and the 2021 winners, and now global sensation, Måneskin who went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the festival's biggest claim to fame internationally is Nel blu, dipinto di blu, popularly known as Volare, a song performed by Italian singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno at Sanremo in 1958, before it took the world by storm.
Quiz
To warm things up, we held a true or false quiz for the audience who had to stand up if they thought the answer was true and remain seated if false. The audience were rewarded with caramelle Italian sweets which fell from the sky, making them very happy!
Competition
We then held our very own mini-Sanremo Music Festival and the audience had to vote for the winner by cheering as loudly as they could for their favourite. They watched three video clips made by some of our SFC1 (Year 12) Italian students who lip-synced to their favourite song that had been part of the festival. The videos were amazing – very creative, professional and extremely well received by the audience.
First up, was Team Brividi who performed a beautiful ballad with a rapturous rap. Next was Team Ciao Ciao with a tantalising tormentone (a sizzling summer hit). Finally, Team Zitti e Buoni performed a raucous rock song.
Once the audience had listened to all three songs, Dr Gamblin judged which song received the most and loudest cheers.
Winning team
Congratulations to the winners - Team Ciao Ciao! They were presented with a fabulous trophy to great applause, Italian flag waving and streamers.
We played out with the winning song of the 1958 Sanremo Music Festival, Volare.
This Italian Prayers was very successful, combining learning and sharing knowledge of Italian culture with fun and laughter. Thank you to all our wonderful Italian students for their participation, enthusiasm and hard work.
