On Monday 10th November, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sophie Harker for the second time.
Sophie is a British engineer and aerodynamicist, and more recently, in her own words, “a professional juggler” due to the project she is currently managing. She presented a very interactive talk about her life, what she has worked on, her past experiences working in an all-male environment and gave some inspiring advice on overcoming adversity. She talked about her current pathway to becoming an astronaut, which is “so close and yet so far”, and her involvement in an analogue astronaut mission in Poland. She described this as one of the hardest points in her career so far, yet the most rewarding. Although she was exhausted by the end of it and had encountered several life-threatening moments, she loved every second and would definitely do it again.
Throughout the talk, she answered our many questions and the answers she gave were enlightening, making the talk very memorable. She is an amazing woman and an inspiration for anyone wanting to pursue a career in STEM.
I had a lovely evening and hope she visits College again soon!
