Early this February, two SFC1 students, Alex and Alicia, represented CLC in the west of England heat of the Joutes Oratoires, a national French debating competition organised by the Institut Français.
They had to debate issues such as the usefulness or otherwise of national services for both young people and the country, whether tourists should be charged higher prices for entry into museums and monuments than locals and whether fast fashion should be banned.
There was a passionate debate on both sides, and our pupils performed well under pressure, winning one debate convincingly and narrowly losing two.
They both felt they learned a lot from the experience and that their speaking confidence had been greatly enhanced.
