On Tuesday 26th September, LC1 had the chance to play authentic Indonesian Gamelan instruments as part of their music curriculum. Having undertaken a project looking into musical elements in detail, this workshop (led by ethnomusicologist Dr Jonathan Roberts) gave the students a chance to realise that music from all walks of life can be analysed in very similar ways, even though our experience of playing and composing for different styles might be radically different.
The Princess Hall stage was glistening with the highly decorative instruments, with the unique tone colour of this music flooding the hall. It was a captivating morning, and the students really enjoyed this opportunity. They will now go on to compare their own performance of a piece with the music of Debussy, who was equally fascinated by this genre.
