Geography Citizen Science Society: Exploring Current Climate Risks Through History
12th November 2025

This week at the Geography Citizen Science Society (Geog Cit Sci Soc), students focused on gathering and interpreting climate data, a particularly timely topic, as COP 30 has just begun in Brazil.

Using the citizen science platform Zooniverse, students took part in the ‘Monsoon Voyages’ project, transcribing weather records from historical ship logbooks dating back to the mid-19th century. These ships, including the HMS Warrior, HMS Eclipse, and HMS Marlboro, once sailed through tropical waters, recording valuable meteorological data that is now being ‘rescued’ and transcribed through citizen science efforts.

The project’s goal is to uncover long-term rainfall patterns and better understand how climate variability has shaped weather in the Singapore and Malacca Straits region over the past century. By contributing to this global effort, our students in the Geog Cit Sci Soc are helping researchers develop a clearer picture of past climate events, providing valuable insights that can inform how we prepare for future climate changes and challenges.

The Monsoon Voyages project is funded by Singapore’s Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund and hosted at Singapore Management University (SMU).

We are proud that our students are playing a meaningful role in advancing real-world climate research through hands-on learning and collaboration!
