Geography Fieldwork
14th June 2021

Earlier in June, SFC1 A Level geographers had the pleasure of undertaking some local fieldwork in College’s lovely gardens. We were very fortunate with the weather!

We sought to investigate how rates of infiltration (when water seeps into the ground) differed depending on soil type/density/texture, antecedent moisture, slope angle and other variables.

The fieldwork experience was highly formative in nature and aimed to build investigative, analytical and critical research skills. We spent a long time discussing the merits but also the limitations of our methodology, and how this could influence our results.

Later in the month, A Level and IB geographers will be embarking on a long overdue and much-anticipated residential fieldtrip. We are heading off to the FSC Nettlecombe Court site in Somerset where pupils will complete the coursework component of their courses. At A Level and IB, this represents 20 per cent of the final grade. Students really enjoy this experience of independent coursework and produce some brilliant reports. In previous years, these have drawn on a myriad of diverse issues such as carbon sequestration and climate change, water cycle processes and flooding, energy flows in coastal systems and the changing face of urban landscapes. Let us hope for some sunshine in Nettlecombe!
