Earlier this week, as part of the Humanities Lecture Series, Mrs Brewis from the Geography Department delivered a timely and insightful talk on the question: Is our climate truly on the brink?
The ‘brink’, Mrs Brewis explained, is linked to natural tipping points in our climate system. When change pushes a natural system beyond a ‘point of no return’, leading to irreversible change: the brink!
Drawing on her expertise in climate science, she unpacked the evidence behind our changing planet, explored the challenges facing today’s generations and highlighted inspiring solutions already taking shape around the world.
COP30 has been widely criticised for failing to cement legally binding targets for the phasing out of fossil fuels. Mrs Brewis shared a balanced perspective on the issue, highlighting how a fund had been created for countries that have contributed least to anthropogenic climate change to be able to mitigate and adapt to the impacts.
Did you know that North America and Europe are responsible for two-thirds of global carbon dioxide emissions?
Did you know that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are higher than the last 700,000 years?
Did you know that TikTok produces three times the emissions of ChatGPT?
Following a controversial Conference of the Parties (COP) in 2019, Cheltenham Ladies’ College pupils and staff took to the streets to protest the failure of governments to commit to climate action. As part of the protests, we all signed a banner entitled “DON’T BE A FOSSIL FUEL, THERE IS NO PLANET B!”
Following the completion of COP30, the Geography Department revived climate activism at College. We have hung up the banner from 2019 and, six years later, given pupils the opportunity to commit their own names and messages to create a mural in the back of one of our classrooms.
It was great to see so many pupils pledging their solidarity to climate action and a true reflection of our community’s commitment to sustainability.
