German Exchange 2022
21st June 2022

College has run a German Exchange programme with Maria Ward-Schule Mainz, in Germany, since 2011. Maria Ward-Schule is one of the most traditional educational institutions in Mainz and has about 1,200 girls, from Year 5 to 13.

After a two-year break, we were delighted to welcome eight German girls and their two teachers to Cheltenham and to CLC in May, and we look forward to the return visit this month. Our exchange programme allows our pupils to experience the school, compare education systems and work on their language skills, as well as to experience German family life. Sixth formers also have an opportunity to complete a brief work experience in a kindergarten and pre-school.

This year, the students and their exchange partners took a trip to Leckhampton Hill and enjoyed cream tea at Huffkins bakery and café. They also went on a bowling evening together. In Mainz, they will visit the ZDF broadcasting studios as well as the Johannes Gutenberg Museum alongside lessons.

Below are some of the opinions from our pupils about the visit:

“They all spoke such good English and we clicked immediately! It was so interesting learning about how different our schools were and that their jokes are a lot similar to those in English!” – Scarlett

“The exchange was so fun because the German students were really nice and we got along well with them” - Emma
