German Exchange September 2022
30th September 2022

College has run a German Exchange programme with Maria Ward-Schule Mainz, in Germany, since 2011. Maria Ward-Schule is one of the most traditional educational institutions in Mainz and has about 1,200 girls, from Years 5 to 13.

We were delighted to welcome eight German girls and their two teachers to College in September and we look forward to the return visit in December. Our exchange programme allows our pupils to experience school in Germany, work on their language skills and experience German family life and culture.

This September, the girls and their exchange partners took a trip to Leckhampton Hill and enjoyed cream tea at Huffkins together. They also went bowling, which was a very lively and joyful event. In December, the students will visit the ZDF broadcasting studios as well as the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main. They will also have time to enjoy the Christmas markets during their stay.

This is what our LC3 (Year 9) German learners said about the Cheltenham week:

Nonni: “The German exchange girls were so nice and lovely. It was really fun having them with us. Time passed too fast – they left too soon.”

Giselle: “The exchange allowed us to learn a lot about the German culture, and we also had a chance to communicate in German. It was lovely to have spent the week with them.”

Neriah: “The German Exchange students were so friendly. It showed me that although we spoke different languages, we had similar interests. I could speak to her like I could to an English-speaking friend. It was lovely to speak to them.”
