On Saturday 11th March, a small group of us held an Asian food fair at St Helen’s. We were inspired to run this project due to our participation in Global Citizens club, one of the many enrichment activities held here at College. The main aim of our project was to spread awareness of East Asian culture and to diminish stereotypes present in our local community. We organised an Asian food fair to highlight the fascinating aspects of our culture to give everyone the opportunity of experiencing it.
The event was packed with many exciting activities. We sold £5 tickets for an all-you-can-eat buffet of dumplings and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and we even taught students how to make the dumplings, creating a great bonding and collaborative experience for everyone involved.
The best part was seeing the Asian community come together, as well as seeing a diverse range of students eager to learn about Asian cuisine. We were very pleased with the outcome of the event since we had an impressive turn-out of students from various houses. All the profits were donated to Children of the Mekong, a charity supporting underprivileged children in South East Asia to have access to education, build their lives and find employment.
Overall, the day was very exciting, fulfilling and undeniably left everyone with an appreciation for Asian cuisine.
