A school Harvest Festival Service is a wonderful occasion to stop and give thanks for all that we have, alongside considering what we can give. This year was no exception! Our Harvest Service was held not only in the presence of the boarding community but also surrounded by cans of beans, pot noodles, jams and other items specified by Cheltenham Open Door. Open Door is a charity which seeks to offer support to the most vulnerable and lonely in Cheltenham, and our generosity will make a huge difference to the guests that they serve.
Harvest this year was also about considering our footprints on this earth, and reminding ourselves of how sacred and precious our world is. We were therefore delighted to welcome local resident Lorraine De Feu and her ‘COP26 Vigil Quilt’ to our Service. Lorraine told us about how the quilt was put together by anyone in Cheltenham who wanted to contribute their voice to COP26. It is a beautiful form of ‘craftivism’ – a visual demonstration of people’s commitment to live more sustainably, and to cherish the earth in all its beauty. As one footprint reads “We need to act – we only have one earth”.
As well as our visual reminders, we also sang some well-loved hymns, said prayers for our world and contemplated how we could play our part in placing our feet well on this beloved earth.
