Ian Standing's architecture talk
7th March 2024

On Friday 23rd February, architect Ian Standing was welcomed to College. A former Director of Associated Architects, Ian presented a fascinating overview of his career and the wide range of projects with which he had been involved, including the design of the new library at the University of Birmingham and the Severn Trent operation centre in Coventry.

Academic Scholars and SFC students were able to gain insights into the design decisions behind notable public and educational builds, among them school theatres, as well as hearing about the numerous awards of which Ian has been a recipient.

The event not only provided an opportunity for those present to spend time reflecting on the requirements and challenges of the design process, but also the structure and workings of a prolific architectural practice. The level of the students’ engagement was evident in the range of questions at the end of the talk, relating to themes of sustainability, architectural styles, and the challenges of working with difficult clients.

Ian Standing’s impressive achievements, such as thirty RIBA awards and six civic trust awards, left the audience engaged and excited to learn more. The talk was inspiring, as all who attended left feeling encouraged to harness their individual skills, pursue their passions, and achieve their goals. As we journeyed through Ian's career, his clear advice to "embrace chance and opportunity" resounded in the audience, inspiring all. Sixth-form college students with an interest in architecture particularly enjoyed this session, gaining a deeper understanding of the significance of integrity and creativity within the industry. Ultimately, the speaker fulfilled the objectives of Forum 42, which were to inspire and educate those who attended, and all who were present were incredibly grateful for Ian Standing's time. Bella, SFC1
