On Wednesday 15th March, a group of SFC1 (Year 12) Economics students attended the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) regional conference, held this year at Clifton College in Bristol. The IEA is one of the country’s leading economic think tanks and regularly advises government on economic policy, as well as providing opinion on topical economic issues.
The students heard three lectures: ‘Climate change – a free market perspective’ – a discussion on market-based solutions to the issue of pollution; ‘Cities and the world economy’ – a fascinating talk on the increasing role cities play in contributing to the global economy’; and ‘Home Working, Domestic Life, and the Labour Market’ – an exploration of how the UK labour market has changed post-Covid and likely implications for future working.
The students did very well in contributing to each of the debates, with excellent questions posed to the speakers by Momo, Kyra, Darah and Lizzy. Overall, the day was a great success and hugely enjoyed by some of our budding young economists!
