From 2nd to 6th May, College celebrated International Week. The event, which is organised by CLC’s International Mentors, is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity within our community. Monday’s Prayers were led by the International Mentors who spoke to students about the importance of International Week and how it is an opportunity for pupils and staff to learn more about and celebrate our multi-cultural environment.
The Classic Department and UC5 (Year 11) Greek students, Decima, Aerin, Evie and Isabella, led Prayers on Tuesday, focussing on Athenian democracy. Students learned that while, in principle, Athenian democracy meant government by the people, many were not able to vote because they were women or slaves, did not have Athenian parents, or hadn't been properly registered at birth.
On Wednesday, the spotlight was on Japan with students in the Modern Foreign Languages Department leading Prayers. The focus was on the cherry blossom tree or ‘Sakura’, as it is called in Japan, and its importance in Japanese culture. The students talked about CLC’s involvement in the Cherry Tree Project which was launched by former prime ministers Theresa May and Shinzo Abe in 2017 to mark 150 years of UK-Japanese friendship. Students sent off an application for a tree to the Japanese government, but due to Covid there was a long delay in delivery. Before Easter, three different varieties of tree were at long last delivered, which have now been planted in College’s grounds.
On Thursday, International Mufti Day was a chance for pupils to wear an outfit reflecting their nationality or cultural heritage with outfits from all four corners of the world (see photos in the Gallery at the foot of the page).
