After the far too long pause caused by the Covid pandemic, this spring, we were delighted to resume our Italian exchange with Liceo Duca D’Aosta, an incredibly vibrant and warm secondary school in Padova, in the Northeast of Italy.
At the end of March, 18 students, from LC3 to SFC2 (Year 9 to Year 13), embarked on the trip to Italy. The trip was a unique opportunity for them to practise their Italian with peers, forge new friendships, experience a different school system, learn about the historic and artistic heritage of the local area as well as to try authentic Italian food, and the unmissable gelato!
As Head of Italian, I am very passionate about cultural exchanges, which I believe are a really enriching, and at times, life-changing, opportunity for young people. I strongly believe that our partnership with Liceo Duca D’Aosta is what makes the trip to Italy so special and beneficial to our students. The girls attended lessons at school in the morning, seeing first-hand how school in Italy works. During the afternoon, we went sightseeing with groups of Duca D’Aosta students who, together with their History of Art and English teachers, had prepared guided tours of Padova, Vicenza and Ravenna in both Italian and English. It was heart-warming to see the tears and the hugs between students from the two schools at the goodbye party on the last evening.
On our only day as a CLC group, we embarked on a guided tour of Venice, which also took us to the island of Murano and San Erasmo. The best part was having our own private boat in Venice, which allowed the group to see aspects of Venice that a tourist would not normally see and reflect on the fragility of the Venetian lagoon and its ecosystem.
I am delighted to see how much the girls have enjoyed the experience and benefitted from it – they now have new Italian friends who they are corresponding with, and no doubt will encourage them in their learning.
Miss Clements and I, together with Mrs Calore and Mr Malfitano at Duca D’Aosta, now look forward to planning the next exchange.
