At 9.00am on Saturday 21st June, 94 LC3 students and nine staff left College for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award walking assessment expedition.
The expedition took place around the Birdlip, Sheepscombe, Cranham area, so it wasn’t long before the girls disembarked from the coaches and set off on their chosen routes. The forecast was fairly severe with temperatures set to reach 32 degrees, however, on the day it was somewhat overcast which helped to keep the groups cool. They had regular water stops for refills and all the groups did very well to reach their campsite in very good time.
After pitching tents and cooking their own supper, the girls had time to relax in the warm, early summer evening. It was lovely to see them all involved in lots of different activities, engaging with each other and generally having a fun experience, all this without a mobile phone in sight! Lights out was at 10.00pm and although there was still some light around, all the groups settled down to a good night’s sleep.
At 6.00am on Sunday, the first of the groups were stirring. Gradually all the groups woke up and were soon busy cooking breakfast and taking tents down. By 7.40am the first of the groups were ready to leave and off they went. All the other groups followed fairly quickly.
The day was spent monitoring their progress and all the groups managed to complete the second day in good time. After a debrief for each group by their instructor, 3.00pm saw everyone on the coaches and back to College. A final big well done from all the instructors and it was back to House/home for a well-earned rest.
