Earlier this term, the PGC (Professional Guidance Centre) team took LC3 on an employability trip to Renishaw Engineering. We were welcomed into one of their halls for an introduction. Renishaw is a high-precision technology group and they focus on multiple fields of development. The staff explained that their products ranged from Olympic racing components all the way to surgical robots.
Our first activity was to piece together LED torches. There weren’t any solders or fancy equipment, but something as simple as bending a wire or taping all the pieces together felt exciting.
The best part of the trip was being able to explore the facility and see their machines work in person. I still remember being overwhelmed by the amount of machinery they had. The machines worked so quietly I couldn’t even hear their gears turning until I was standing right in front of it.
There were around five working robots and many more held on display. As I looked more closely, the hand of the robot had a small red bead on its tip. It didn’t seem to be touching, but instead only grazing the side of the metal, barely making a dent. I remembered Renishaw’s introduction: a high-prediction technology group, and although I had an idea of what their robots were going to be like, I was still surprised on how specific their measurements were.
There were plenty of other robots on site too: a robotic dog, printers and even bigger machinery caged for safety. I imagined what it would be like to work at a place like this, to be able to handle all this machinery and work with other people that are just as passionate about technology.
Although I’ve never considered robotics to be a part of my future, this trip may have just changed my mind.
