The Digital Services Department recently hosted a Retro Gaming Night for LC3 (Year 9), transporting them back in time to the golden era of gaming. The night was filled with thrilling competitions and a host of classic consoles and video games, culminating in an epic Mario Kart tournament to determine the ultimate champion.
Unlike modern gaming, this was not an event you could do online or remotely, to play together you had to sit next to your opponent. The main stage hosted a Challenge style Mario Kart experience on the large screen. This had students challenging friends, teachers, Houseparents and support staff. It was clear that some of the staff remembered these games from their childhood, Sidney Lodge Houseparent, Mrs Godfrey, was particularly impressive.
The event tested the students' gaming skills and determination by competing to gain the highest scores in video games such Frogger and Pac-Man. The participants put their reflexes and strategy to the test, aiming for immortality on the leaderboards. Mr Todd set a challenging score on Chuckie Egg, which was swiftly beaten by some determined students.
Creativity was on full display as students participated in the 'Best Video Game Character Created from Lego' competition. With boundless imagination and a touch of LEGO mastery, they brought beloved characters to life in stunning brick-built form.
Adding an element of anticipation and excitement, the 'Guess the Most Expensive Retro Item' activity engaged the students in an intriguing guessing game. A table adorned with an array of vintage gaming memorabilia had everyone scouring for clues to identify the most valuable treasure. It was a lesson in appreciation for gaming history and the allure of rare collectibles.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Mario Kart tournament. Competitors unleashed their racing prowess, vying for victory on nostalgic tracks that had once captivated generations. Tensions ran high as banana peels were expertly dodged and shells skilfully launched. The champion Varvara looked a little shocked by her victory, but raced superbly and fully deserved the title of 'Champion'.
