As the night draws in, we turn up the mood lighting, and our singers and instrumentalists step forward for the first Library Music Night of the academic year. We hold these once a term, and everyone’s invited, whether to perform or to spectate.
This November’s edition saw record numbers in attendance, with nearly 150 students from all year groups supporting the event. There were many newcomers and performers in the audience, and the atmosphere was electric from the start.
The programme contained a smattering of upbeat pop covers, thoughtful numbers, tunes from musicals, and, excitingly, some original, sassy punk/rock from our very own Misoksoup (now available for your listening pleasure on Spotify).
Adiella (SFC2) kicked us off with some sultry Cleo Sol and Donny Hathaway, and the UC5 and SFC1 band saw us home in style with a double bill of Ariana Grande songs.
In between, memorable highlights were Mischa’s rendition of ‘Someone Like You’, briefly making us wonder how Adele got into the room with us. Similarly impressive vocals came from Yoyo and Yolanda (LC2), who gave us some Moana and Christina Aguilera classics, and Nicole (SFC2), who sang Beyoncé’s ‘I Was Here’.
Part two contained the first ever appearance of our full-sized harp (whoa!), as part of a beautifully rearranged UC4 rendition of ‘My Favourite Things’. Martha (UC5), our very own Billie Eilish, made her LMN return for one of her songs, hauntingly accompanied by Lily (UC5) on bass and extra vocals. Before their rapturous applause, you could genuinely hear a pin drop.
We could not have had a better night! A huge thank you, as always, to the Music Department for supplying musical equipment galore, to Miss Brandon, who once again, compiled an incredible line-up, to her husband Mick, who took charge of the technical set-up for each act, to Mr Keir, our chief compere, and of course, to all our performers and audience for turning out in great numbers and supporting each other so wonderfully. We are truly blessed and indebted to all of them and look forward to doing it all again in the Spring Term!
