Maths Week 2025
26th November 2025

Maths Week at Cheltenham Ladies’ College turned our pupils into number-powered problem-solvers as they spent nine days exploring the many ways mathematics shapes the world around them.

The week began with LC1 and LC2 pupils transforming Sidney Lodge into an origami studio, discovering the geometry and symmetry hidden inside delicate paper folds. With paper, patience and plenty of creativity, they uncovered the geometry, symmetry and hidden structure inside every delicate fold.

Each morning, students were greeted with a Daily Newsletter packed with:

  • Mathematician of the Day: Celebrating a maths legend who tackled problems most of us would abandon instantly.

  • Interesting Maths Facts: Fun insights into the surprising ways mathematics quietly controls the universe.

  • Job of the Day: Real-world careers where maths takes centre stage.

  • Daily Activities: Challenges and events designed to stretch thinking, spark curiosity and encourage everyone to get involved.

Pupils also tackled tutor-time quizzes, while LC2 enjoyed an exciting code-breaking session that kept everyone on their toes.

On Tuesday, Maths Prayers brought the whole community together to reflect on the wonder, beauty and creativity of mathematics, featuring fascinating facts about square numbers and a lively competition between teachers.

A major highlight of the week was the visit from external speaker Gabriel Johnson, who delivered three captivating talks tailored to different age groups.

LC1 explored Why Some Things Grow So Fast!, discovering how exponential growth can transform tiny changes into huge outcomes — from multiplying bacteria to viral social-media trends.

IB students delved into The Maths Behind AI, learning how optimisation, gradient descent and other mathematical ideas underpin machine-learning systems used in self-driving cars, social-media feeds and facial-recognition technology.

A-level students investigated How Maths Predicts Epidemics, building from exponential functions to simple SIR models to understand how mathematics helps scientists and governments track and respond to the spread of disease.

By the end, the girls had ventured far beyond the usual curriculum and discovered that numbers are far more fun, surprising and powerful than they ever imagined. Maths Week inspired students to think creatively, nurture their curiosity, deepen their knowledge and appreciate the remarkable role mathematics plays in shaping our world.
