May Concert 2023
9th June 2023

The Brass Ensemble set the scene with entrance music, Fanfare & Chorus, as a sold-out audience of students and parents arrived. Starting a concert can be a daunting prospect, however Miki (piano) opened with an assured and musical rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne in C# minor. All our following soloists from LC3 and UC4 (Year 9 and Year 10) performed with flair and confidence which belied their years.

Paloma (flute) performed Bozza’s Aria with a mature, silvery tone. Anya (violin) impressed with two rarely performed movements from a Bach Sonata in B minor. Isabella charmed the audience with her rendition of Love is a Plaintive Song. Charlene (clarinet) showed off her tone and impressive technique in three movements from Reade’s Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite. Pearl (harp) successfully conveyed the character in the frenzied piece Tarantula from Spiders. Janice (harp) stunned the audience with her jaunty piece Harpicide at Midnight. Kaitlyn (piano) performed a masterful interpretation of the Allegro movement 1 from Beethoven’s Sonata in E major and Kathryn (violin) demonstrated her impressive technique and string crossings in Kreisler’s Variations on a theme by Corelli. It will be exciting to follow the musical progression of all these young musicians.

In addition to our solos, we had the pleasure of hearing a range of music from Mozart to City of Stars from La La Land, performed by some of our smaller College ensembles: Brass Ensemble, Flute Choir, and Saxophone Ensemble. It is an important and advanced skill to play with peers in small ensembles, and the ensemble performances showed the level of commitment and dedication the pupils put into weekly rehearsals practising with these groups. The concert was rounded off by Lower College Choir performing two contrasting pieces - For the Beauty of the Earth and You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile from Annie - demonstrating the level of finesse and enthusiasm that we have come to expect from this group.

We received lovely feedback from both parents and students including this response from an LC3 parent:

We thoroughly enjoyed the concert on Saturday - clearly many very, very talented young ladies in the school. I actually felt quite emotional watching some of the performances. The standards are obviously exceptionally high with some wonderful solos. It was a privilege to be able to attend.

A huge thank you to all the performers who took part and Leila (SFC2/Year 13) who helped us backstage.
