Murder Most Unladylike Literary Tour
16th September 2021

In addition to our Heritage Open Day tours, this year College ran a special event for children. We were celebrating Guild member and best-selling author, Robin Stevens, whose 'Murder Most Unladylike' series of books take place in a boarding school. Set in the 1930s, the books feature schoolgirl detectives Daisy and Hazel, who solve three different murders at their school, Deepdean, and several others around the world.

While Deepdean School for Girls and Cheltenham Ladies' College are quite different schools, there are clear connections and many parts of College will be very familiar to those who know the books.

Three groups of enthusiastic readers were taken to see College's Gym and the Princess Hall, both of which have a striking similarity to locations in the books. Murders occur in both places: a push from the Gym balcony and the poisoning of a parent at the Speech Day meal. We also visited the tunnel, where the body is hidden and the Big Music Room where the Inspector reveals the murderer's identity with a lot of help from Daisy and Hazel, of course.

To finish the event in style, the young tourers were served 'Bunbreak', including squashed fly biscuits and iced buns, by some of our LC3 and UC4 pupils who dressed convincingly as Deepdean girls for the day. Our knowledgeable visitors all enjoyed the special tours and were very excited to see the places that inspired Robin to create Deepdean School. Ripping good fun was had by all!
