This year, Houses took the initiative to organise events and displays to share their experiences of neurodiversity during the week of 13th to 19th March.
Glenlee recognised the importance of mindfulness in neurodiversity. Their drawing room was turned into a relaxing space with a lavender-scented diffuser, tea lights, yoga mats and blankets on the floor, and a star light projected on the ceiling.
Farnley took a similar approach when their Wellbeing Ambassadors organised a drop-in mindfulness evening on Tuesday. All the girls had the opportunity to take an intentional break in a ‘no phone zone’ with face masks, brownies, mindfulness colouring sheets, a mindfulness music tape, fairy lights, and an essential oil diffuser.
Executive Function Skills resource cupboards are growing in popularity in Houses across campus. Full of ‘goodies’ to promote organisation, task initiation, planning and prioritisation and ways of staying on task, they are a good start to building those neural pathways.
St Hilda’s created a neurodiversity notice board display. The students posted notes on it with messages that started, “I like the way I think because...”
In Elizabeth, an SFC2 (Year 13) student shared her experiences of ADHD by giving a talk to the House. It was well received and showed that neurodiversity is integral to who we all are as a community.
Mrs Blades (Mathematics Coach) and Ms Ashworth (Teacher of Mathematics) sent a questionnaire to students about maths anxiety to improve understanding of it in College. 150 students gave an insight into their feelings towards different aspects of maths including mental arithmetic, Prep and tests.
Maths anxiety is most prevalent in high achieving girls and so it is important that we understand its potential impact. The results look very interesting so we are sure they will have a positive impact in the future. Full results will be published to students in the coming weeks.
