After finishing third at the Oxford Schools’ Debating Tournament in last month’s regional rounds, we were honoured to represent College at the competition’s Finals' Day last Saturday. The prestigious Oxford Union building was impressive, but what was even more intimidating was the prospect of competing against 118 elite teams from all over the world.
Despite our initial nervousness, we gradually got into the flow of the competition, co-operating with each other and drawing upon our knowledge and experience to the best of our abilities. We were presented with four different motions, covering topics from the ethics of artificial intelligence to politics and feminist theory, all of which encouraged us to question and engage with different perspectives on the world we live in. We also faced a wide variety of teams that challenged us to be flexible in our thinking and responses.
Although we ultimately were not able to break through to the semi-finals, the day was exciting, fulfilling, and undeniably an invaluable experience. We are immensely grateful to Mrs Sibbit and the leadership team of the debating society for the opportunity, and for training us throughout the past few months.
