Last week was very busy in the PGC, as we welcomed guests both in-person and virtually to speak to students about a range of global university destinations.
Read about students’ experiences below.
“Recently, we had the opportunity to attend a webinar with an admissions representative from the University of Pennsylvania, Jordan, who provided valuable insights into UPenn’s application process. She emphasised the importance of academic excellence and co-curricular activities that reflect students’ passions and leadership skills, citing examples such as students starting their own clubs. She also highlighted UPenn’s focus on candidates who contribute to their communities.
“Jordan explained that UPenn has multiple undergraduate schools, which means the application process varies depending on the school chosen. She noted that some schools are flexible, understanding that students may be uncertain about their exact major, and therefore allow students to change majors even after enrolment. During the application process, students only need to select an intended program within their chosen undergraduate school.
“Furthermore, Jordan shared that unlike the ‘Personal Statements’ required by UK universities, UPenn’s ‘Essays’ are designed to portray your personal story, your experiences, values, and goals, to help the admissions team understand who you are and how well you would fit into the UPenn community. She also explained that most offers are unconditional, as the university trusts that applicants’ academic progress will be maintained.
“The session concluded with a Q&A, where students raised additional questions that Jordan addressed.
“This was an incredible opportunity to gain firsthand information about UPenn’s application process, expectations, and undergraduate schools.”

“On the 7th October, the PGC hosted Dr Barry Craig for a discussion and Q&A about the process of applying to Canadian universities. This session offered us a glimpse into some of the realities of the Canadian admissions landscape and provided us with further clues into how to maximise the college experience. He explored how Canada’s universities offer a competitive, diverse range of possibilities for a gateway into your desired career. We discussed how crucial it is to maintain an open mindset in your approach to a university pathway, as well as the professional journey beyond.
“Alongside this, Dr. Craig provided us with insightful details into how one must develop their own mindset whilst exploring higher education opportunities. We considered the importance of character alongside academics and how both are crucial to make a lasting impact on the world around us. This was an inspiring reminder of how whilst attainment in a subject is important, real change in our world is powered by qualities like kindness and goodwill, which cannot be measured by an exam result.
“In all, Dr Craig’s words were nothing short of eye-opening, and I would recommend experiences like this one to anyone who wishes to gain a new perspective on their plans for the future.”

“I feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the seminar introducing Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and Duke universities. As a first-year Sixth Form student, it was an invaluable experience to gain a deeper understanding of these top US institutions and to meet admission officers and faculty members in person.
“Being able to ask questions directly after the talk helped me clarify what makes each university unique and what they look for in applicants. I particularly enjoyed learning about Duke’s “FLUNCHES”, where undergraduates can invite faculty members to lunch and potentially form mentoring relationships.
“The seminar not only expanded my knowledge of the US higher education system but also inspired me to aim higher and explore new possibilities for my academic future.”
