Those Who Dare is a networking event hosted by the Professional Guidance Centre (PGC) to encourage pupils to gain experience interacting with adults, as well as learn more about potential career paths.
I attended the May event along with a few of my friends, all of whom (including myself) thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This particular event was held in the PGC with around 30 students moving around in small groups, chatting with members of Guild.
Despite having never met any of the adults beforehand, the environment made the conversations easy, far less awkward and somewhat personal.
A significant part of why Those Who Dare is such a good opportunity for younger pupils is because of these moments; moments where you need to actively try and find topics that both parties are knowledgeable on, or can engage in. For instance, my friends and I found ourselves talking to someone whose expertise we knew nothing about and faced the challenge of trying to find appropriate questions to ask. It may be difficult when you’re in the moment, but working through these moments can only be beneficial.
There was a wide variety of jobs discussed, from hospitality to investment banking. When I originally signed up for the event I had very little expectation of meeting someone who specialised in a field I am interested in, so imagine my surprise when I meet someone who excelled in one of the fields I’m hoping to pursue - Hotel Management. There truly was something for everyone.
I would highly recommend students attend events similar to these, as they offer the perfect opportunity to improve conversational skills under informal circumstances. (There were also plenty of snacks available, including macaroons and strawberries!)
Thank you so much to the PGC team for organising this event!
