On Monday 25th April, students in UC5 (Year 11) and above took part in a Professional Guidance Centre (PGC) talk about US college admissions with representatives from two US universities: Niki McInteer, Associate Dean of Admissions and International Undergraduate Admissions at Wake Forest University and Alex Alvendia-Wienkers, Associate Director at the University of Southern California (USC). SFC1 (Year 12) students Maria and Maral both attended the talk and wrote about their experience.
Maria, SFC1:
“In Alex Alvendia-Wienker’s talk, we learned how much USC has to offer - from over 100 degree programmes, covering eight areas of study, to an expanse of student-led clubs such as the ‘Code the Change’ club. We were able to see how greatly USC helps and encourages students to embody leadership and commitment in their day-to-day lives. Alex discussed the road we might have ahead of us at USC, and we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the talk and ask multiple questions.
On behalf of everyone that attended, I would like to sincerely thank Alex and the PGC for giving us this invaluable opportunity to help shape our understanding of how educationally rich and compelling our path ahead of College as a USC student might be.”
Maral, SFC1:
“Niki McInteer gave an interesting insight into daily life at WFU, from deepening our comprehension of the work ethic at Wake Forest to their core values, as well as traditions upheld by the university. Niki’s engaging talk presented students with an opportunity to get a deep understanding of the university, learning about the university’s sense of community and collaboration. The student support system at WFU is truly endearing, and their vast range of curricular and co-curricular activities offer an unimaginable amount of variety and opportunity for students.
After getting in further contact with Niki following her talk with College, I learned about Wake Forest’s R.I.D.E programme (Realising Inclusion, Diversity and Equity). This was a truly astounding framework implemented by Wake Forest as their guidepost for ‘Inclusive Excellence’. The programme is an ongoing commitment at WFU to realise their vision in ‘being a learning community that values and upholds the humanity of all people’.
We are extremely grateful to have had this opportunity get to know Niki and find out more about Wake Forest University.”
