Pixel Toys Trip
26th November 2025

On Tuesday 11th November, my friend Dora (SFC2) and I were invited to visit the headquarters of Pixel Toys, a game company that produces mobile and VR-based, industry-level games.

This was a fantastic opportunity to observe work and life at the company, as both Dora and I look to pursue Game Art at university.

Once we arrived, we were invited to the communal area, where we watched several 15-minute presentations about the different departments of the company, including Programming, Art, and Sound Design, to name a few. We also learned about the history behind Pixel Toys.

We were also excited to find out that Art, our main topic of interest, encompasses a range of different media forms, including UI Art, Character Design, Concept Art, Animation and much more. We got to understand the process of how a game is slowly built together by so many different departments, which was really fascinating!

After a quick lunch break, we got to visit the Art department office and explore behind the scenes. We spoke to Character Artists, who used professional industry-level tools such as MAYA and Substance Painter to create realistic 3D models for the games. They took us through their process and introduced their work schedule, showing us what it was like working in the industry.

We then spoke to an Animator, who led us through how they animate the 3D models created by the Character Artists, developing in-game idles and skills that players will use.

We saw UI Artists who perfect the User Interface to allow for better accessibility, making it easy to navigate controls, as well as adding special VFX (e.g. victory screen, buttons, layout, etc) that make the game look more visually appealing.

Lastly, we observed the work of a Marketing Artist, who looks after the advertisements on the App Store and other gaming websites. They create posters that draw people to play the game, posing characters and building visually appealing screens that capture the game's unique art style.

This experience was absolutely unforgettable, and has encouraged me to work even harder so that I have a chance to work in a professional environment just like that!
