The Chaplaincy team were delighted to welcome guest speakers to a very moving Prayers on Thursday 24th November.
St Andrew’s Church in Ramallah, Palestine, has an ongoing relationship and deep friendship with St Philip and St James Church in Leckhampton, Cheltenham. As part of this friendship, the two church communities visit each other regularly, and on this occasion, we welcomed Rula and Lulu from St Andrew’s Ramallah to College to share their experiences of living in the occupied West Bank.
Revd Nick Davies from St Philip and St James also joined us to set the scene regarding the geography and context of St Andrew’s, Ramallah. Rula and Lulu then told us about some of the very challenging and hostile situations they’ve experienced as they seek to live, work and worship in this difficult part of the world.
Students and staff showed their appreciation for Rula and Lulu’s openness, and we were glad to be able to give them a platform to share their stories. It was a sharp reminder to us all not to take the freedoms we have for granted, and there was much to think about.
We ended with prayers for the community of St Andrew’s Ramallah and a blessing for Rula and Lulu and their companions as they continue to raise awareness about life in occupied Palestine – in the very place where Jesus walked and talked, and lived and died.
