On Wednesday 30th April, College was treated to an absolutely spellbinding evening of music performed by the Regimental Band of the Scots Guards.
The Princess Hall was filled with expectation as the band entered in their full red tunics, along with the bearskin clad fanfare trumpeters positioned in readiness for the full military band version of the National Anthem, arranged by Gordon Jacobs.
Twenty of our own students had enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside the band in rehearsals before taking to the stage with them for the evening concert, a number of whom also found themselves performing solos within the pieces performed – something of an experience to take away and treasure.
The concert was conducted by their new Director of Music Major Wheeler (who incidentally had only been with them for three days prior to this concert), alongside their Bandmaster, WO1 Gibson, who narrated a wonderful poem alongside a piece called 44 Scotland Street.
The band had programmed some terrific repertoire which included some notable military marches, alongside music for wind band with a specific highlight being ‘Benny Goodman Memories’, which featured a lot of brass and an excitable drummer!
The audience thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle, and 240 members of Lower College also got to enjoy the experience.
I very much hope the band will return again in the future.
