Opting to leaving London for cleaner air, more space or even a mortgage-free life is nothing new, but it seems that the pandemic’s remote working revolution has propelled the trend for escaping the city to new heights.
Hamptons reported that a record 90,000 people left to buy new homes throughout the UK in 2021, the largest exodus in “at least a generation”, citing the rise of hybrid working and the cost of property in London as the main factors.
With London and the South East set to be hit hardest by the increasing cost of living, their reporting predicts that by 2025 the “increase in flexible working, part at home, part in the office, seems set to strengthen the links between the capital and the Southern regions”.
Country living and a slower pace isn’t for everyone, but there are certainly benefits for many families. From small market towns like Cirencester, recently named The Sunday Times best place the to live in the South West, to a thriving Regency town like Cheltenham or the stunning villages of the Cotswolds, the countryside is not one size fits all.
With excellent shops, restaurants, wine bars and cafes, Cheltenham is known for Jump Racing and the renowned Cheltenham Festival. It also hosts four thriving artistic and cultural Festivals; Literature, Music, Jazz and Science, and boasts excellent schools including Cheltenham Ladies’ College, which The Sunday Times has named Top Independent School in the South West for the third year running.
Here at CLC, we are known globally as a top boarding school, but we also have one of the largest cohorts of day pupils. Belonging to one of our four day houses, these pupils number over 180 and make up around a fifth of the school.
All our pupils, whether day or boarding, are fully integrated for lessons, trips and co-curricular clubs, ensuring everyone enjoys the benefits of a holistic education and our diverse global community, as well as being grounded in the beauty and culture of Cheltenham and the surrounding areas.
While remote working continues to thrive, for some the odd trip into a central office might still be necessary. Commuter links into the South West, especially from towns like Cheltenham, are strong. Regular trains run direct to London Paddington in under two hours and the M5 motorway is close by, with Bristol, Birmingham and Oxford all accessible within an hour’s travel.
