The Chelt Scientist
The hugely anticipated second issue of The Chelt Scientist, CLC’s very own science magazine, went live online on Wednesday 11th May. The magazine – written, designed and edited by a team of dedicated students – features articles, photography and a range of features which truly showcase the intellectual curiosity of CLC students. From biotechnology to astrophysics, geochemistry to artificial intelligence, there’s something for anyone with an interest in science. We invite articles from students in any year group and welcome parents and Guild members to get in touch with Head of Science, Mr Gill if they would like to contribute in any way to future issues. The online copy of the magazine can be accessed here.
Year 5 Green Chemistry
On Thursday 12th May, a group of 12 Year 5 girls from local schools started a five-week Chemistry project at CLC, investigating green and sustainable chemicals. The first session looked at the use of sustainable ingredients in shampoo, and future weeks will involve extracting chemicals from plants amongst other practical activities. Mrs Bailey was thrilled at the enthusiasm demonstrated, not only by the Year 5 pupils involved, but by that of the Sixth Form ‘experts’, Pippa, Lucy and Jemima. Chem 13 Exam Twenty-eight SFC1 (Year 12) students took part in the University of Waterloo’s Chem 13 online exam on Thursday 12th May. This test explored chemistry beyond the scope of the A Level course, and we were delighted that so many students chose to put themselves out of the chemical comfort zone to participate in the challenging competition. This is the first time students from CLC have entered the competition, and they are up against other students in their final year of high school chemistry in the US and Canada. We are looking forward to receiving their results.
DNA Essay Competition
Congratulations to Year 12 student Emma for receiving an Honorable Mention in the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) DNA Day Essay Contest. This contest is open to students in Years 10 to 13 worldwide and asks students to examine, question and reflect on important concepts in genetics. Essays are expected to be well-reasoned arguments that indicate a deep understanding of scientific concepts related to the essay question. They are evaluated by ASHG members through three rounds of scoring. Read more about Emma's essay here.
