At the end of Half Term (Friday 4th to Sunday 6th November), 32 pupils from across our senior teams in hockey, lacrosse and netball travelled to Loughborough University for an immersive Performance Tour experience.
Loughborough University is the leading sporting university in the UK and we were delighted to collaborate with them to develop a bespoke model for our pupils. We are fortunate to have excellent contacts and relationships with the university which allowed us to build a truly impressive programme with handpicked elements to really stretch and challenge our pupils.
During the weekend, the pupils took part in fixtures (some of which were against the prestigious Loughborough University sides), sport-specific training sessions, a ‘speed’ workshop with the acclaimed coach Jonas Dodoo, a physiology workshop and visits from a range of different elite athletes. There was even some downtime with karaoke, fireworks and fairground!
The students were fortunate to meet and hear from Sarah Glenn (England cricketer), James Mazarelo (England Hockey goalkeeper), Olivia Broome (Paralympic and Commonwealth medal-winning weightlifter), Ethan Akanni (GB 110m hurdler and founder of the Athletics Pride Network) and Liam Jefferson (Athlete Recruitment Manager at Loughborough University and Coach of Loughborough Riders Basketball).
The Performance Tour was more than just experiential; it was carefully structured to help the students in the future. In the build-up and throughout the weekend, they were asked to focus on three things:
How can I be my best in games?
What can I do today to make this more likely tomorrow?
What habits or behaviours can I establish that will help me do this consistently?
The Performance Tour is part of a larger programme of activity including Pre-Season Training and other sports tours. This all helps us toward our performance vision of being the leading school for supporting and developing student athletes.
Feedback from the pupils involved has been incredibly positive and we are already is discussion with Loughborough University about improvements we can make to what will hopefully become an annual event.
