On Thursday 13th November, we hosted our second German Film Day, welcoming nearly 50 Sixth Form pupils, studying German from schools as far away as Stroud, Marlborough and Hereford.
We watched two excellent films, which looked at life in the GDR in the mid to late 1980s, ‘The Lives of Others’ and ‘Good Bye Lenin’. Before watching the films, students learned about the history of the era and discussed the differences between a dictatorship and a democracy – in German, of course! We hosted a post-film discussion centred on the characters and the dilemmas they faced, the reasons for their choices and the nature of a system based on lies and fear.
