SFC1 Cheese Tasting 2025
7th July 2025

On Wednesday 25th June, both the SFC1 A Level and IB French classes shared the gastronomical experience of tasting different French cheeses, which helped us understand French culture better and allowed us to develop our vocabulary.

As we entered the classroom, it felt as though we were stepping into a real French restaurant - the ambiance and table settings were so authentic and fun. French music played softly in the background, and each table was neatly set with tasting plates and review sheets for the cheese of course!

We all got to share our thoughts and laugh a lot too. We sampled a variety of French cheeses, from the nuttier Comté to the more pungent Roquefort, each with its own story and region of origin. Some of us discovered new favourites, while others were surprised by the bold flavours. It was a multisensory experience—sight, smell, touch, and taste all played a role in helping us describe what we were eating using the new vocabulary we were provided with as a starter activity. For example, the phrase “ça pue!” meaning “it stinks!”.

The tasting encouraged group interactions in French, by comparing textures, aromas, and flavours, which deepened both our linguistic and cultural appreciation. It was a delightful way to bring the language to life outside the textbook. Many thanks to the French department, and particularly Mme McDonald, for organising this unique event.
