SFC1 TRIP TO COTSWOLD FARM PARK
9th June 2023

With summer exams and predicted grades looming around the corner, the Summer Term certainly has not been a relaxing one so far. However, the Biology trip to Cotswold Farm Park was the perfect antidote.

The day started with a great talk on conservation by a local farmer who delved into the environmental impacts of modern-day agriculture and what we need to change for us to feed ourselves sustainably. It was a fantastic mixture between the hard-hitting reality that we are facing, and a clear vision of what steps can, and are being taken to improve the way we source our food.

He also touched on what the farm park is doing to increase their biodiversity, which was great to hear about as it showed the practical application of methods we had only heard about in the classroom.

Often we find ourselves learning abstract facts that feel very disconnected to the world we live in, and going to a talk like this was the perfect way to show us how important it is to apply the biology that we learn to real life.

After the talk, we had the opportunity to roam around the park in the sun to see and pet all the lovely animals they had there. One of the aims of the farm park is to look after more native breeds whose populations are declining, so it was a wonderful reminder that you don’t have to look too far to find such an interesting variety of creatures.

One of the best activities we took part in was bottle-feeding the lambs. It was a brilliant atmosphere of chaos and happiness as we took it in turns to feed the enthusiastic lambs their milk.
