It was exciting to host Sir Geoff Hurst MBE in Prayers on Monday 20th June. His visit caused quite a stir, particularly for staff, and by the end of Prayers our student body certainly knew why!
Sir Geoff is renowned for scoring that legendary hat-trick in the thrilling men’s final match against West Germany in 1966. It was a game that went into extra time, and Sir Geoff’s brilliance meant the men’s football team won the World Cup 4-2. We replayed the end of the match, noting the famous final goal, scored in the last few seconds of that much-revered match. It was remarkable to have Sir Geoff in the Princess Hall standing alongside us. The spontaneous applause that followed reflected the excitement on the pitch so long ago – and ardent football fans in England yearn for such a World Cup victory again!
Sir Geoff gave very interesting responses to questions, and we learned how he did not play in earlier games in the World Cup, but got his chance due stepping in for an injured teammate. He spoke of ways he prepared by remaining physically and mentally ready – and the rest is truly legendary.
Sir Geoff also spoke encouragingly about women’s football and the growth of the game, as well as football generally. We reminded our students of the place we have in sport, and shared the excitement of the upcoming Women’s Euros.
Sir Geoff came along with his grandson Jack, who owns local gym, ‘Gym 66’, named in reference to his grandfather's achievements.
We are especially grateful that Sir Geoff visited College in support of the 2022 CLC Giving Day on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th June. He congratulated us on our efforts to raise funds for the Beale Awards whereby we can offer more funded places to more individuals who can also benefit from our world-class education. We all believe in the transformational value of education, and the more we can do to expand this initiative, the better!
