On Thursday 24th November, a group of six Sixth Form students participated in the Regional Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) debating competition which takes place at Cheltenham College every year. More than six different schools participated, making it a great atmosphere of keen and competitive MFL debaters.
It was an amazing opportunity to improve our oral fluency and gain more confidence in our Spanish and French, all while having a bit of fun putting on our best argumentative personas to defeat the other teams. We debated compelling motions such as whether CCTV cameras are an invasion of privacy, and whether humans are the most dangerous species to our planet – all in Spanish and French, of course!
The debates were roughly 20 minutes each and consisted of some very heated exchanging of views. With only 10 minutes to prepare our argument, and no time to prepare for rebuttal, we had to think fast and come up with counter arguments for other teams on the spot. With one Spanish team getting through to the semi-finals, and one team winning the whole competition in Spanish and another one in French, it was definitely a rewarding afternoon for MFL!
