We were thrilled to host an exciting Spanish film event at College, welcoming 70 Sixth Form students from six different schools. Attendees included students from local schools as well as those travelling from Bristol and Badminton, all united by a shared passion for languages and Spanish culture.
The day began with a fascinating lecture in Spanish on Pedro Almodóvar’s celebrated film Volver, delivered by Mrs Mooney. Her insightful presentation introduced students to the film’s themes of family, memory, and resilience, while also highlighting Almodóvar’s distinctive cinematic style. Students then watched the film, in Spanish, gaining a deeper appreciation for its narrative and cultural context.
Following the screening, we led a series of engaging activities designed to encourage discussion and critical thinking. These included group tasks, creative responses, and language-based challenges that helped students explore the film’s characters and plot in more depth.
After enjoying lunch at College, students reconvened for an afternoon screening of El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) by Guillermo del Toro. This visually stunning and emotionally powerful film sparked lively conversations about historical context, symbolism, and storytelling. The day concluded with a collaborative discussion comparing both films, focusing on their themes, cinematic techniques, and cultural significance.
This enriching event provided a unique opportunity for our Sixth Form hispanists to connect with fellow linguists from other schools, share ideas, and deepen their understanding of Spanish-language cinema. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and intellectually stimulating experience for all involved, and we look forward to hosting similar events in the future!
