Just before the Easter weekend, Annie in LC3 (Year 9) played in the U18 Inter-counties Badminton Tournament where she represented Gloucestershire. She played No.2 in the U18 age group, playing predominantly singles matches against players four years older than her from other counties.
Annie also played in the U17 Gloucestershire Bronze tournament, a National Tournament held at Oxstalls in Gloucester. This event was open to all players across wider counties. Annie progressed to the final where she played the number 1 seed. Annie was successful in winning this match and tournament. She then went on to also win the doubles event – two gold medals. Huge congratulations on this outstanding success!
Three students, Sophie, Chloe and Clara who had previously won the Gloucestershire Schools Table Tennis tournament in U13, U16 and U19 events, represented Gloucestershire in the National Schools Tournament. This involved playing against all the other county champions across England. The standard was incredibly high and they all played well and gained so much experience. Chloe gained two wins against Northamptonshire and London West in U16 age group.
South West Swimming Championships
Well done to LC1 (Year 7) Jess who achieved a very impressive nine regional qualifying times. Last weekend she raced in five of these events, achieving new personal bests in four and finishing in the top 10 in two events. A fantastic achievement and we wish her well in her next round of swims.
Our U12 and U13 swimmers raced superbly against strong opposition from Cheltenham College Prep, and it was pleasing to see how well they maintained their form under race pressure. Jess (LC1) deserves a particular mention, with her record-breaking double performances. Swimming in virtually back-to-back races, the 50m Breast and 50m Butterfly, Jess broke College’s LC1 records which have stood for 12 years - a fantastic achievement!
Congratulations also go to the following for setting new personal bests:
Amy (LC1) - 50m Breaststroke
Ellie LC2 (Year 8) - 25m Back and 50m Butterfly
Libby LC2 - 25m Breaststroke
Kitty LC2 - 25m Butterfly
Lucy LC2 - 50m Free
Independent Boarding School Relays
Our Junior and Inter teams excelled at the Independent Boarding School Relays.
The Junior team of Jess and Chizzy (LC1) and Ellie and Kitty (LC2) set the tempo taking gold on the medley relay.
This inspired the Inter quartet of UC4 (Year 10) Katie, Catlin, Bernice and Michelle (LC3) to go one better than last year and dig deep to outswim the other teams. Bouyed with positivity and aspirations to do the double, both teams raised their games again in closer races to take the honours across their age groups.
It was fantastic to see CLC represented in the U15 and U18 Lacrosse Academy tournaments this Easter in Nottingham. Gabby, Arabella, Bibi and Zahra gained invaluable playing experience. Guild Member Phoebe Thornett (2020) was also playing in the Women’s Home Internationals for Scotland, demonstrating her continued progress in lacrosse at a high level.
Well done to Annointed (LC3), Coco, Daphne, Grace, Izzy and Lucy (all LC2) for taking on the challenge of a two-day Academy assessment run by England Lacrosse. We are incredibly proud of them for making it this far and wish them all the best in the next stages.
Five CLC crews raced at Evesham Regatta recently. Rachel (SFC1/Year 12) raced in the Junior 18 Single whilst Maja and Tara (SFC1) raced in the Junior 18 Double.
Both crews performed brilliantly in very close races with Maja and Tara winning on the line to progress to the final. The UC4s (Year 10) had their first experience of a side-by-side regatta, racing doubles in the morning and the coxed quad in the afternoon. Well done to Florrie, Alyssa, Ela, Isabella and Ivanka who all overcame nerves to gain some valuable experience.
Seventeen CLC pupils played Downe House in a friendly fixture. The players have been working hard, led in training by SFC1 students Aerin, Katie and Hayley. The group spilt into two teams and grew in confidence throughout the game.
The matches were an opportunity to gain some valuable experience and will allow the team to prepare for the upcoming fixture against the University of Gloucestershire.
CLC hosted King's Worcester for a morning of LC1 and LC2 hardball and softball matches. All the players impressed with desire to learn and their ability to adapt. A special mention for all those playing their first hardball game, scoring a boundary or getting an out for their team.
The U18 team batted first and recorded a respectable 128 runs with a notable first for Issy as she went on to score 65 runs not out, including three SIXES! King's Worcester were formidable opponents and managed to reach our score with six overs to play.
Congratulations to Aimee (SFC1) who played for Jersey Women’s cricket team over the weekend in three T20s. Aimee was able to put in a superb performance with the bat and scored 53. The matches were friendlies in preparation for an upcoming ICC Womens T20 World Cup European qualifier - giving Aimee and the team a chance to qualify for the Womens T20 World Cup in Bangladesh 2024.
Well done to our athletes on their first outing out of the season at Bromsgrove. All displayed great resilience and determination in their events. Despite this being the first time competing in a year, encouraging performances were recorded by all. A number are already performing above the District Schools qualifying standard – so setting the foundations for hopefully a successful term ahead.
Megan (LC2), Si Ning and Luli (UC4) all competed in the first round of the County Club Championships on Saturday. Well done to Megan for winning the 75m U15 Hurdles and finishing 2nd in the long jump for her age group, to Si Ning for gaining 2nd in the U17 800m, and to Luli for finishing joint 2nd in the High Jump. We wish them well for the next round of events in a few weeks time.
House Tennis
It was fantastic to have the Seniors back playing House Tennis. There were lots of competitive matches all played in good spirits. Well done to St Helen’s and St Margaret’s who were joint winners of the Senior competition this year.
The rain didn’t dampen the girls' spirits in the UC4 House Tennis. Well done to Glenlee for winning some closely played matches. (Gallery below)
National Schools v Talbot Heath
The team of Aimee, Clara, Arabella and Live battled hard against a very strong Talbot Heath team, but sadly lost 12-0.
Play Your Way to Wimbledon
U14 Singles
Eight Lower College girls competed in the U14 Play Your Way to Wimbledon singles event. Alyssa was runner-up and Sophie (both LC2) was the winner. Sophie now progresses to the County Finals in July.
U18 Doubles
Fourteen girls competed in the U18 Play Your Way to Wimbledon doubles event (seven pair draw). Winners were Decima and Clara (SFC1), with the runners up being Arissa and Siya (SFC1). Decima and Clara now progress through to the Area Finals in July.
Saturday Tennis Matches
Last weekend saw many CLC pupils out on the tennis courts. There were matches for the U12, U13 and U14 teams against Downe House. The U14s were excited to be back on the court in their first fixture of the term. There were lots of closely fought games against a challenging opposition. Players took lots away from the matches and improved during the afternoon.
In matches against Marlborough, the U18 and U15/14s teams had some close matches with new partnerships appearing. A great afternoon of tennis in the sunshine!
