Sports Roundup: Early December 2022

Hockey

Last week saw the U14 hockey team appearing at the West Regional Finals at Clifton College on Thursday. They played amazingly whilst learning how to manage tournament hockey in the cauldron of knock-out pool formats. CLC won through to the semi-final but unfortunately the girls went out on penalty flicks. Well done to all those who stepped up to be heroes taking a flick under that pressure and to Liv (LC3 / Year 9) for making some incredible saves.

At the Regional Indoor Hockey Tournament, the U16s worked fantastically as a team to disrupt the press of opposition teams in some very tight games. They had some brilliant goal scoring opportunities and were very close in missing out on regional qualification by one goal.

The U18s also demonstrated some exciting hockey. The team rose to the challenge and displayed excellent teamwork. Thank you to Poppy who stepped up to play in the U18s, as well as playing for the U16s the day before.

Fencing

Hasina (SFC2 / Year 13), Giselle (LC3 / Year 9) and Sasha (UC4 / Year 10) all took part in the County Invitational Foil Competition held at CLC on Sunday 20th November. They all fenced extremely well and special congratulations goes to Giselle for winning the Novice Ladies’ Trophy. Our thanks to Cynthia (LC3 / Year 9) who helped with the officiating all day.

Netball

Both the U12s and U15s were in action in the fourth round of the School Sport Magazine National Schools Netball Competition.

The U12s were in action at home against St Helen and St Katharine, Abingdon, and despite the result, it was a great learning curve against an experienced side. A last-minute winner away to Cwm Rhymni saw the U15s progress to the next round. They now face Queen Anne’s School, Reading, at home.

Congratulations to Ella (LC3 / Year 9) and Eniami (SFC2 / Year 13) who were both in action for Severn Stars Player Development Programme team in the London Pulse U17 Invitational Netball tournament on Saturday. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to shine!

Equestrian

It has been wonderful to see some new riders representing CLC in National Schools competitions alongside our more experienced competitors. We fielded teams at all levels at Rectory Farm and West Wilts Arena Eventing. The courses are notoriously tough and very educational to horses and riders who complete a show jumping course and then a course of cross-country style fences.

In the 70cm class, Isadora (LC2 / Year 8) was placed an amazing fourth out of 55 competitors and qualified for the Arena Eventing Championships at Hickstead next May.

In the 80cm class, Isadora, Persia (both LC2 / Year 8) and Gabriella (UC4 / Year 10) were placed team eighth with Isadora seventh and Gabriella eighth out of 85 competitors! In the 90cm class, Persia was 12th with an immaculate clear round out of 45 competitors.

Also held at West Wilts was NSEA Show Jumping. The CLC riders braved pouring rain and an incredibly early start for Gabriella, Isadora and Olivia (LC2 / Year 8) to place team fifth, with Gabriella in individual seventh and Isadora 12th in a huge class of 73 competitors.

Swimming

House sport always generates impassioned performances, and Senior House Swimming did not disappoint, with races going down to the touch, ensuring the points were tight. Well done to all who raced for their House, some returning to the pool after a few years away, and to the following girls who set new personal best times:

50m Free: Bea (both UC4 / Year 10), Tessa and Ella (UC5 / Year 11)
100m Individual Medley: Bernice, Bella (both UC4 / Year 10), Sofia (LC2 / Year 8)
50m Breast: Lucia (UC5 / Year 11)
25m Fly: Kat, Beth, Jazzy (all UC4 / Year 10), Tessa (UC5 / Year 11)

The results were as follows:
