A glorious morning provided the backdrop to the LC1 and LC2 (Year 7 and 8) House Running competition, with students showing real commitment and resilience as they competed for their House. They displayed real grit as they challenged themselves out on the course, and all runners should be proud of their efforts – well done.
The LC3 (Year 9) pupils were in good spirits and gave determined efforts all round, as they took on their three-lap course of field. All competitors should be proud of their endeavours.
The South West is a powerhouse for swimming and our three teams did superbly at the regional team championships, beating their season best times and executing their races well. A special mention goes to the Junior team of LC1 (Year 7) pupils, Chizara and Jess, and LC2 (Year 8) pupils, Daphne and Sofia, who set a new College U13 record on the 4x50m freestyle and finished seventh. The Inter team also secured a top 10 finish on the freestyle with a highly commendable sixth.
The Gloucestershire U16 Netball Competition was a phenomenal afternoon of netball at Well Place, with the CLC U16 netball team unbeaten all day. Pool match victories over Westonbirt, Ribston Hall, Denmark Road, King’s Gloucester and Wycliffe saw them set up a semi-final clash against Cheltenham College. The team maintained their composure and produced a superb performance to secure regional qualification.
Then onto the final against Dean Close, again CLC just stepped up a gear and were named Gloucestershire Champions 2022. They now represent the county at South West Regional Finals in January Exeat 2023.
After a busy period of trials, we are delighted to announce the following students have made it into Netball Pathways:
U18 Player Performance Pathway Severn Stars (England Netball): Eniami (SFC2 / Year 13) and Ella (LC3 / Year 9).
U18 Team Bath Academy Development Centre: Verity (UC4 / Year 10).
U18 Severn Stars Nova Academy: Tessa (UC5 / Year 11) and Aida (UC5 / Year 11).
U15 Gloucestershire County Academy (England Netball): Verity and Anya (both UC4 / Year 10).
U13 Gloucestershire Satellite Academy (England Netball): Serena and Jessica (both LC2 / Year 8)
CLC’s U18A played Malvern College in the England Hockey Tier 2 Cup Round 2, and despite Aimee (SFC1 / Year 12) breaking the deadlock with a well worked goal, Malvern College were the eventual winners. They now look forward to a run in the plate competition.
U18B gained valuable tournament experience in the U18 Gloucestershire Hockey tournament, hosted by CLC. The team immersed themselves and ended the day on a high, having held the eventual winners to a 0-0 in the second half through superb pressing.
U16A were also drawn against Malvern College in the England Hockey Tier 1 Cup Round 2. Both teams played to their full potential, and it was a pleasure to watch and coach. The game ended with a 0-0 draw and so went to penalty strokes, with Malvern College securing the place in the next round. The players now prepare for their next game in the plate competition.
CLC was represented at the annual Senior South West Regional Tournament by a team of U15 lacrosse players. Participating in a tournament that is aimed at teams made up of Sixth Form players is ambitious, however this group brought an amazing attitude and effort on the day. They proved themselves capable of learning and applying strategies in real time; and they played with hustle and heart, showing commitment and resilience until the final whistle.
A special mention goes to Katie (UC4 / Year 10), the U15 goalkeeper, who faced 45 shots on target and maintained a 60% save average – incredible!
Congratulations to Alice (LC2 /Year 8) for coming first as an U14 and fifth overall at the Lowland Championships in Landgraaf.
On Monday 3rd October, the ski team travelled to the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre to race. For some, this was the first race experience for the CLC team. Katia (SFC2 / Year 13), Cameron, Hana and Waka (all UC5 / Year 11), all took responsibility for a small group of skiers, guiding them during open practice and for their course inspection. Everyone tried very hard and should be really proud of their efforts. Results are yet to be confirmed but we had some top 10 finishes within age groups with Alice finishing with the fastest time across all age groups.
Congratulations to SFC2 (Year 13) student Georgia who has been selected to play cricket for the Luxembourg national cricket team in an international tournament in Spain this November.
Congratulations to Katherine (UC4 /Year 10) who came second (out of about 40 competitions) in the SEG 90cm, on Rory. She also came fifth in the unaffiliated competition on her other horse, Toby.
Saturday and Sunday saw two students venture outside of CLC for the County Gloucestershire Badminton Tournament. Sophia (UC5 / Year 11) entered the U16 event as she wanted to challenge herself and gain match play experience. She was an encouraging support for our younger player, Annie (LC3 / Year 9).
Annie played in the U14 singles event on Saturday and proved too strong and only dropped four points in the final. She also dominated in the girls’ doubles winning all her games comfortably.
On Sunday, Annie played in the U18 singles and mixed doubles events. Her fitness shone through having two long three-game matches to put her through to the semi-final and then the final. She played some outstanding badminton and also gained the U18 singles champion title. She lost in the semi-final in the U18 mixed doubles where she partnered a boy from Cheltenham College. Annie should be extremely proud of her achievements this weekend – well done!
