Equestrian

Lily (UC5 / Year 11) qualified both her horses for the British Showjumping National Championships held at Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth, this summer.

On her bay gelding, over a very challenging, full height, 110cm course, she achieved an impressive second place, especially impressive given her horse is only five years old and stands a sizeable 17.2 hands tall.

In the ultra-fast and competitive 100cm class, Lily, riding the 10-year-old grey gelding ‘Dakota Blue’, was the outright winner, after a stunning nine horse jump off, taking the Individual Schools National British Showjumping Championship title.

Well done to Wendy (SFC2 / Year 13) who came in the top six in the 110cm class at Hickstead, and qualified for the main ring and finished seventh. At the David Broome Event Centre, Wendy competed again in the 110cm class and finished first, followed by second in the 1.20m and a double clear round in the 124cm at Bolesworth.

The Horse of the Year Show is one of the most prestigious horse shows in the world, and after many years of hard work and dedication, Scarlet (LC3 / Year 9) has managed to pursue her dream with her mounted games pony, ‘Honey’. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Scarlet and Honey, and we congratulate her and her pony.

The Eventing International Youth Championships took place at Bishop Burton College in Yorkshire in August. Riding as individuals and in the teams for the Central Region were: Katharine (UC5 / Year 11) in the 90cm class, Matilda (SFC2 / Year 13) in the 1m class and 2022 leaver, Laura Bingham, in the two-star international.

Riding as individuals in the two-star international were: Ursula (SFC2 / Year 13) and 2022 leavers, Alice and Islay.

The Equestrian Team’s season got off to a flying start at CLC’s own National Schools Showjumping Competition held at Rectory Farm on Saturday 17th September. The sun shone and it was wonderful to see new riders coming forwards to represent CLC, and more experienced riders stepping up to higher levels.

Saturday kicked off with classes that were all qualifiers for the grassroots championships, so were hotly contested!

The team of Tess (LC2 / Year 8), Seraphine and Lara (both LC1 / Year 7) were second in the 70cm class and Seraphine, Hannah (both LC1 / Year 7) and Clem (LC2 / Year 8) were team third in the 60cm class.

Issy (LC2 / Year 8) was individual fourth in the 70cm, Lara (LC1 / Year 7) was third in the 75cm and 6th in the 70cm, Hannah (LC1 / Year 7) was third in the 50cm, Clem (LC2 / Year 8) was seventh in the 60cm and Alivia and Olivia (both LC2 / Year 8) produced super clear rounds.

CLC had two team and three individual qualifications for the Championships!

Sunday was an incredibly successful team day with a total of five National Championships qualifications for CLC!

Gabriella, Grey (both UC4 / Year 10), Bel (UC5 / Year 11), Persia (LC2 / Year 8) were fifth in the 80cm. Christina and Bee (both LC3 / Year 9), Persia and Gabriella were third in the 90cm. Christina, Georgie and Hester (SFC1 / Year 12) were fifth in the 100cm. Bee, Katherine (UC5 / Year 11), Isla (SFC1 / Year 12) and Ursula (SFC2 / Year 13) were second in the 100cm. Ursula, Georgie, Katherine and Isla were third in the 110cm.

All the riders will be looking forwards to the National Schools Championships in October.

In other equestrian news, Lily (UC5 / Year 11) riding Dakota Blue won the 110cm Derby at the David Broome Equestrian Centre. The competition includes jumping a Derby Bank and a jump known as the Devil's Dyke!

Polo

Congratulations to Lucy (SFC2 / Year 13) who competed at the Town Cup end-of-season tournament at Cirencester Park Polo Club. Lucy competed with various international polo players and played on the same team as Nina Clarkin, Guild member and number one female polo player in the world.

Modern Pentathlon U19 World Championships – Poppy Clark (2022)

Following her good performance at the European Championships, Poppy was selected to represent GB at the U19 World Championships. The World Championships took place in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy, in early September and we look forward to hearing Poppy’s news in due course.

This competition is part of Poppy’s continued journey in the sport, her involvement with the GB programme at Bath and hopefully reaching the full senior level in due course.

Rowing U23 World Championships – Katherine George (2020)

Katherine and her partner Vwairé breezed through their semi-final, qualifying comfortably for the ‘A final’. They then raced again and did incredibly well to win Bronze!

Notably, they were consistently one of the fastest boats throughout every round of the competition, covering the 2,000m in just over seven minutes every time. Congratulations to them both for this truly incredible achievement!

Eventing U18 European Championships – Jaymee Savill (2022)

Jaymee performed a wonderful dressage test, posting a score of 32.2, which ranked her in the top third of the field of 60 going into the next stage. She then flew round a testing and undulating cross-country course well within the allocated time. That left her 11th overnight, heading into the final phase of showjumping. It was notable that there were quite a few CLC girls (and some staff) at Hartpury cheering Jaymee on.

Jaymee rode really positively and jumped clear, with her horse Ash putting in a great round. Jaymee rose up the leader board to finish seventh overall. Jaymee was aiming for a ‘32 double clear’ before the event, which is exactly what she delivered – a really impressive result for a great rider, with more to come in the future no doubt.

Pre-Season Training Camp

The pre-season training camp in early September was a fantastic start to the year. We started with the four-day Senior Training Camp with over 50 UC5 to SFC2 (Year 11 to 13) pupils participating in sports, alongside physical and cognitive elements as well as social activities. The Junior Training Camp ran over two days, with a similarly action-packed timetable enabling pupils to be active, re-connect with friends and settle into the new College year.

Tennis

In August, Jemima (SFC2 / Year 13), Anika, Decima and Clara (all SFC1 / Year 12) travelled to London to compete in the Play Your Way to Wimbledon national finals. They had previously qualified locally and regionally which allowed them to reach the national stage. Both pairs played two days of matches and during their time at Wimbledon, girls were given a tour of the club, as well as access to the players’ lounge and restaurants.

Arabella (UC4 / Year 10), Liv and Ella (both LC3 / Year 9) all competed in the Gloucestershire County Closed Tennis Tournament at the end of August at East Glos Club Cheltenham. Arabella reached the semi-finals of the U16 competition, Liv won the U16 consolation event, and Arabella and Liv came third in the U14 doubles event. Ella made the quarter finals of the U14 and U16 singles. Well done to everyone who took part.

Skiing

Alice (LC2 / Year 8) has had a busy summer. She has taken every opportunity to train on either indoor snow or glacier, training for an incredible 27 full days. Alice recently competed in the National Indoor Championship Races, finishing an incredible second place in the English Senior Championships. In the Welsh Championships, she achieved the fastest time overall. We look forward to hearing about Alice’s performance when she competes in the Lowlands European Championships in the Netherlands later this month.

CLC skiers took part in the English Schools Ski Association Regional Qualifier on Sunday 18th September. Due to smaller numbers, there was a really relaxed atmosphere at the Gloucester Ski Slope. Giselle, Alexia and Pearl did amazingly in their first ever race for CLC, while the more experienced girls laid down some great times. There was a supportive team atmosphere throughout – well done all!

Fixtures

We have already had many fixtures taking place this term with teams representing College in Hockey, Squash, Lacrosse and Swimming. Many girls have been busy training across all sports ready for the busy term ahead.
