Below is a roundup of sport throughout the summer holidays which includes students, staff and Guild.
Skiing
Alice (LC2/Year 8) is a prodigiously talented alpine skier, already representing GB in age group competition.
In the middle of August she became the youngest ever overall winner of the women’s British Indoor Championships, winning the senior title. An astonishing result.
This result followed three weeks training in snowdomes in Belgium and Holland, followed by two weeks on glacier in Switzerland. Alice returned to Belgium for a few more days of training before joining us for pre-season training at the Health and Fitness Centre ahead of term starting.
Badminton
In July, Annie (UC4) won a National Bronze badminton event in the U15 singles. Annie cruised through, winning every game. This was a fantastic tournament win. Annie is one of the top female badminton players in Gloucestershire, of any age!
Lacrosse
CLC has supported England Lacrosse by hosting the South West Regional Talent Academy since 2018, it’s wonderful for our facilities to be used by such talented athletes during the holidays. This summer, eight different CLC pupils have taken part in the Regional Academy – Issy, Lucy, Coco (LC3/Year 9), Bibi, Gabbie, Emmiliine (UC5/Year 11), Emma and Emi (SFC1/Year 12). They will be involved in the academy throughout 23/24 – a great achievement!
Equestrian
During the Summer, Issy (LC3) and Katherine (SFC1) competed at the National Youth Championships in Eventing. The National Championships were hosted at Bishop Burton in East Riding, with competition taking place over five days. Issy (pictured below) competed in the individual, with Katherine in both individual and the team competition, representing the Central region.
Congratulations also to Emmiline (UC5) who came 3rd individually during the Regional Dressage competition (helping her team place 2nd) and then she won the Regional Eventing (Wales and Middle England).
Imogen Simmonds (Cambray, 2011)
On Saturday 26 August, Imogen Simmonds finished a fantastic 3rd in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Finland. This result follows her IRONMAN 70.3 European Champs 3rd in Tallinn earlier in August.
Imogen described the result as a “bit of a shock” but her form this summer justified a strong showing and a truly impressive result.
Following the impressive result, Imogen has risen to 10th in the Professional Triathlete Organisation world rankings.
Aimee (SFC2/Year 13)
In Summer Term 2023, Aimee made her international cricket debut playing for Jersey in T20 World Cup qualifiers against Germany, France and Sweden. This was a really big achievement for Aimee, playing senior international cricket, with the BBC featuring the news story prominently on the BBC Sport homepage for a couple of days in early June.
Poppy Clark (2022)
Poppy had a wonderful time competing at the 2023 Laser Run Biathle-Triathle European Championships.
Poppy was competing in a range of events which are all part of the Modern Pentathlon family. Specifically:
Biathle = Run, Swim, Run
Triathle = Shoot, Swim, Run
Laser-Run = Run with shooting each lap
Across the range of events, in her age group, Poppy finished:
1st Triathle Individual
1st Laser-Run Individual
1st Laser-Run Mixed Relay
2nd Triathle Mixed
3rd Biathle Mixed Relay
5th Biathle Individual
Since the European Championships Poppy has gone on to compete in her first Senior competition in Switzerland, completing the full five discipline Modern Pentathlon.
Phoebe Thornett (2020)
Phoebe spent the summer in Prague, representing Scotland in the Lacrosse U21 European Championships.
She had a great tournament; being awarded MVP in her first game vs Ireland, and finishing the tournament with 14 goals and seven assists, which placed her as one of the top ten attacking players in the Championship.
Scotland finished 6th overall, missing out on the Semi-Finals.
Katherine George (2020)
Katherine competed at the World Rowing U23 Championships at Plovdiv, Bulgaria with her GB rowing partner Vwairé, earlier in the summer. Katherine and Vwairé claimed Bronze last year.
After dominating the heats, they qualified for the final, where they faced last year’s winners from Romania. Katherine and Vwairé put in a seriously impressive performance to claim a Silver medal, one better than last year.
Katherine and Vwairé rowed a very mature and measured race, working to their own planned tactics and pacing themselves brilliantly throughout. Despite being unable to overhaul the Romanians, they did finish strongly to go comfortably sub 7 minutes in astonishing heat.
Katherine has now competed at the World U23s three times, finishing 5th, 3rd and now 2nd.
Mr Dockery
Mr Dockery had a wonderful learning experience as part of the coaching team for England in Prague at the European Lacrosse U21s. England won the tournament, remaining undefeated throughout.
He said “There was a lot of late nights watching game footage and game planning. It was such a great learning experience, experiencing a variety of assessment methods as well as new techniques for questioning players. We also taught the players a range of new concepts, things I’ll look to bring back to College.”
We are proud to have been able to support Mr Dockery with this experience and excited to see what he brings back to his teaching at College.
Miss Nimmo
Miss Nimmo was away earlier this summer competing in the European Master Games 2023 in Finland. She participated in two out of 29 sports offered in this multi-sport event (swimming and triathlon). Her journey to the Games was hindered by a bike crash that resulted in a broken collarbone, which needed to be surgically repaired!
Remarkably, after just five months of training, Miss Nimmo managed to compete and excelled in a busy three-day program of events.
In the pool, she achieved age group wins in three out of four races, with her 200m Back time currently ranking 1st in her age group in GB for the year. She contributed to her team's success, helping them secure bronze medals in both swimming relays, even competing in one relay just four hours after finishing her triathlon race!
In the Sprint Triathlon, she did fantastically well in all phases finishing 2nd overall and 2nd in her age group.
Well done Miss Nimmo, such a great role model for staff and pupils alike!
