The Spring Concert took place in the wonderful surroundings of the Princess Hall on Wednesday 15th March. This concert is always a lovely occasion and a highlight in College’s calendar, and this year was no exception.
It is always tinged with slight sadness, as for many of the SFC2 (Year 13) students, this is their last major concert at College. This year’s cohort are no exception. They have been the most fantastic students to work with, and have given their absolute all, both in preparing for this particular concert, but throughout the time they have been members of Symphony Orchestra and, in some cases, String Serenaders too.
The concert began with a complete performance of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor. We were able to perform the complete work on this occasion with three different soloists: Jiayi, Stephanie and Vanessa (all SFC2 / Year 13). All three students blew the audience away with their display of musicianship, stage presence, artistry and control over their own performance. This was followed by String Serenaders performing Mozart’s Divertimento in D major, followed by the fantastic Hoedown by Aaron Copland – a brilliant and virtuosic piece which the girls performed with real style and composure.
The second half saw a truly magical performance of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G major. The orchestra were beyond measure in their playing of this delightful but tricky work. Members of the audience commented afterwards on the fact that they had “never heard the Symphony Orchestra sounding quite so magnificent!” There were some fantastic solo passages too, ably performed by our principal wind and brass players: SFC1 (Year 12) student Amelia (flute), UC5 (Year 11) student Zadie (horn), SFC2 (Year 13) students Semi (oboe) and Wendy (clarinet), alongside some strong brass playing from the trumpets and trombones.
Overall, the concert was an absolute tour de force and one which, I have no doubt, will be remembered by the students for a very long time.
