String Prizes 2022
20th October 2022

A total of 70 pupils performed in the various string prizes and non-competitive class at this year’s String Prizes. This was a fantastic number and each student performed with confidence and projection.

Over the two wonderful days of music making, we heard so many genres of music on different stringed instruments, such as Chopin’s Cello Sonata, virtuosic violin pieces by Sarasate, Handel harp concertos and even a soothing rendition of Ain't No Sunshine on the guitar.

Our adjudicator this year was cellist, conductor and previous Director of Music at Chetham’s School of Music, Stephen Threlfall. He had this to say after all the classes were over:

“A little note to say thank you and to send my fulsome congratulations to all the musicians who played to me throughout two memorable and thoroughly rewarding days adjudicating the CLC string prizes.

“It was particularly gratifying to witness the guidance and support that is clearly being given by all the string staff and accompanists. It was with no small amount of pride to witness the cycle of musical encouragement being delivered from generation to generation.

“I was particularly impressed by each student’s musicianship and composure and, given their busy daily lives, the high standard of playing across the board, demonstrating such potential for the future.

To round off my visit I had opportunity to hear music performed by the String Serenaders; the perfect finale to my visit.”

A huge thank you also to our fantastic accompanists, Mr Jones, Mr Lloyd, Mr Stockton and Mrs Brown, and to all our brilliant visiting string instrumental teachers for preparing each of their pupils so well.
