The TEDx CLC Women event was a memorable and thought-provoking experience centred around the theme ‘The Edge of Knowing’, exploring the space where curiosity meets uncertainty. Organised by three SFC2 students (Betty, Choe and Amy), the event brought together six inspiring speakers from UC5 to SFC1 (Ehije, Tosin, Yannie, Georgia, Amy, and Maegan), covering a wide range of topics including medicine, politics, philosophy, history, astronomy and death.
Speakers were selected through careful examination of their video submissions, ensuring each talk reflected authenticity, depth and passion. Throughout the event, students were encouraged to move beyond what feels familiar and engage with ideas that challenged their assumptions. From ethical questions in modern healthcare to reflections on political responsibility and the mysteries of the universe, the talks sparked meaningful discussion and genuine interest. The atmosphere was warm, engaging and filled with curiosity, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the exploration of the ‘edge of knowing’.
Three of our speakers, Maegan (SFC1), Ehije (UC5), and Tosin (UC5) shared their experience:
“Last Saturday, I was selected to give a TEDx speech at the inaugural TEDx CLC Women, hosted by some of our very own SFC2s. The theme was ‘The Edge of Knowing’ and I chose to explore the idea of Near Death Experiences and the spectrum of death. It was a fantastic experience filled with excitement and nervousness as the six of us speakers spent the last few days working together to perfect our speeches. I truly enjoyed every moment of the journey and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity!”
Maegan (SFC1)
"When the opportunity arose to give a speech, initially I was reluctant to rise to such a challenge. But through the rigorous journey of studying, crafting and refining, I began to really delve deep into what ‘The Edge of Knowing’ truly was. Astronomy has always been a fascination of mine, and developing my TEDx talk allowed me to explore how the planets interact, the functionality and dynamics of the universe and how to convey this with a degree of intrigue to the audience. Ultimately, I learnt how to critically and analytically research a topic whilst telling a story. A truly rewarding experience."
Ehije (UC5)
“When I initially found out I was selected to give a TEDx Talk I was slightly uncertain, not only because I did not think I'd get picked but because public speaking is not a favourite activity of mine. After proceeding anyway, I got to give my final presentation to the other girls speaking and the organisers. Everyone was very supportive and provide me with constructive feedback, so I felt ready on the day of presenting.
“My talk was on the topic ‘Beyond the Edge of Knowing is Faith’. I had the opportunity to explore how everything that we believe and take as fact is based off the faith that everything around us exists as we perceive it does and as we are told it does (based off of other people’s discoveries). Finally, we all ended the morning by taking multiple selfies with the TEDx sign and singing into the podium microphone, and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
Tosin (UC5)
