The death of the Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022
9th September 2022

On behalf of our College community, we are extremely saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty The Queen, who died peacefully at Balmoral Castle on the afternoon of Wednesday 8th September at the age of 96. Our condolences to the Royal Family and everyone who is in mourning. College’s Union Flag has been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect. The Queen was our longest-reigning monarch and has served the nation with dedication and compassion for 70 years.

Pupils and staff gathered as a community for Prayers (assembly) this morning, as we begin this period of national mourning. At lunchtime, College Choir shared a beautiful and poignant rendition of In Paradisum from Fauré’s Requiem in the Princess Hall to mark this historic moment.

We look back fondly on Her Majesty’s last visit to College in 2004, which formed part of College’s 150th anniversary celebrations when the north quadrangle, complete with amphitheatre, was named the QEII Quad. The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, met with then Principal Vicky Tuck and numerous students and staff members.

Queen Elizabeth II greeting members of staff and Council members at Cheltenham Ladies' College in 2004 College Chaplain, Revd Canon Josie offered the following prayer to the College community today:

Gracious God, we give thanks
for the life of your servant Queen Elizabeth,
for her faith and her dedication to duty.
Bless our nation as we mourn her death
and may her example continue to inspire us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A book of condolence has been made available in the Quiet Room for those who wish to leave messages.
