On the evening of Wednesday 4th June, seven students from LC3 to SFC1 attended a fashion show at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum to showcase the work they have produced through the Young Designers project, organised by the Cheltenham Education Partnership.
Students from several local schools have attended a series of workshops over the course of the academic year to lead them through the process of design, garment making and prop construction. They were coached by a range of industry professionals and introduced to a wide range of careers that they had not previously considered.
Working to the brief ‘Man vs Nature’, the students were challenged to deconstruct existing items of clothing and utilise scrap fabrics creatively to produce an impactful piece of wearable art based on this theme.
Our two groups comprised of Lizzie, Skye and Penny (LC3, UC4) and Tosin, Hana, Demelsa and Bea (UC4, SFC1). The former took ocean pollution as their theme, considering this to be a good example of where man interacts with nature. They produced an elegant dress in aqua tones, a dramatic cloak embellished with plastic waste and a fabulous gold trident made by Skye and modelled by Lizzie! The second team thought about large scale man-made infrastructure and contrasted with some of nature’s smallest species – bugs! Hana modelled this team’s expertly sewn industrial looking patchwork shorts and top, accompanied by brilliantly engineered bee wings and a sculptural bee bottom!
The outfits looked incredible and were the result of strong teamwork, innovative thinking and many hours of experimentation and development. The students especially valued the opportunity to work with girls from other year groups and other schools and I know they would want me to thank Anita Griffin, who accompanied them to all the workshops and Katie Taylor, their workshop leader.
