On Monday 28th November, we staged a Theory of Knowledge conference in which our IB cohorts rubbed shoulders with students from other IB schools. The conference was entitled, ‘Your future!’
The first keynote speech was given by Dr Richard Bentall, retired paediatric surgeon and inventor of microturbine machines which sit in rivers and generate electricity from the flow of the water.
Dr Bentall’s presentation was designed to get students thinking about how they could actively commit to reversing climate change. They were fully engaged with the optimism of the talk and the opportunities to make a positive impact on their own future.
The other keynote speech was delivered by Aisha Thomas, founder of Representation Matters. Aisha’s passionate talk about the vital importance of representation in all sectors of society was extremely well received. Many students flocked onto the stage at the end of the presentation to say how much they had appreciated the talk and to beseech Aisha to return to College, to speak to a wider audience.
The other topics covered included an exploration of ‘the truth’, and a session about understanding cultural difference through the lenses of contrasting epistemologies.
Ultimately, the underlying premise was to encourage students to think more deeply about knowledge acquisition and dissemination, and to confront modern-day, global issues, such that they could work to improve the states of the natural and human worlds in the future.
